The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) on Tuesday said it has recorded a total of 2,299 aftershocks up to Tuesday since the magnitude 7 tremor rocked Abra on 27 July.
Phivolcs said it continues to monitor earthquake aftershocks ranging from magnitude 1.4 to 5.1 in Abra, with 758 plotted and 58 felt earthquakes.
As of 1:57 p.m. on 2 August, a magnitude 2.7 tectonic earthquake has been recorded in Lagayan, Abra.
“This is an aftershock of the 27 July 2022 M7.0 Northwestern Luzon Earthquake,” Phivolcs said.
The state seismology bureau previously cautioned the public of possible aftershock events for several days or even months, following the recently classified “major earthquake” in Abra.
Meanwhile, Phivolcs also recorded a 5.6 magnitude earthquake at around 1:24 p.m. with its epicenter located at northwest of Lebak, Sultan Kudarat with a depth of 36 kilometers and was recorded as a tectonic tremor in origin.
It added that Intensity 3, characterized as weak shaking, was felt in Cotabato City; Intensity 2 or “slightly felt” vibrations in General Santos City, and an Intensity 1 or “scarcely perceptible” shaking from the tremor was experienced in Zamboanga City.
The Instrumental Instensities were likewise reported in T’boli, South Cotabato (Intensity 4); Santo Nino and Koronadal City, South Cotabato, and Kiamba, Sarangani (Intensity 3); General Santos City, Cotabato City, Malungon and Maasim, Sarangani (Intensity 2); and in Zamboanga City, Davao City, Cagayan de Oro City, Kidapawan City (Intensity 1).
Phivolcs said possible aftershocks are expected but with no significant damage.
Another tectonic quake rocked West of Lebak, Sultan Kudarat as of 3:05 p.m. on Tuesday, both possible aftershocks and damage are not expected.
