It’s not a person.
Singapore Biennale 2022 will take on the name Natasha instead of a theme to suggest a personal level of connection with artists and audiences alike.
On the seventh installment of the large-scale international exhibition, Natasha will feature several site-specific and commissioned contemporary works that have never been seen before on the biennale circuit happening from 16 October 2022 to 19 March 2023.
Helmed by four co-artistic directors from different countries — Binna Choi, Nida Ghouse, June Yap and Ala Younis, Natasha bring an exceptional line-up of over 50 artists and collaborators from around the world to create a journey where one encounters the meaning of multiple perspectives.
“Through this act of naming, SB2022 moves away from the perception of a biennale as a mega-thematic exhibition and towards an engagement with the ways that art, and that which is considered other to art, may be deeply connected to the subject and matter of life,” the SB2022 co-artistic directors wrote.
Natasha’s artists and collaborators are from Singapore, Germany, India, Jordan, South Korea, the Netherlands, and other countries. These fellows comprise not only visual artists but also musicians, writers, researchers, academics and art professionals.
“Visiting Natasha is not only to return, but to be conscious of the values most intensively experienced during the pandemic: intimacy, living the unknown, the capacity to adapt, realizing other possibilities of living and relating to the world,” they added.
Among the projects that audiences can look forward to is “The Library of Unread Books” by Heman Chong and Renée Staal. It transforms a retail unit into a library composed of donated unread books accessible to anyone who visits.
Valentina Desideri and Denise Ferreira da Silva will also bring their “Sensing Salon,” an ongoing studio process that facilitates collaborative studying and experimenting with different tools for reading and healing.
The full list of artists as well as the schedule of events for SB2022 will be announced in October.
Singapore Biennale is organized by SAM and commissioned by the National Arts Council Singapore.
