P46M illicit cigs fall

More than P46 million worth of smuggled cigarettes from Singapore were seized by the Bureau of Customs (BOC) Port of Subic Thursday.

A total of 1,122 master cases of Marvels Filter Cigarettes declared as textiles were discovered during the physical examination.

Investigation found that the consignee, Proline Logistics Philippines Inc., allegedly is not a registered SBMA locator of foreign cigarettes and tobacco products.

It is also not included in the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) List of Registered Importers of Cigarette Brands.

Because of this, Maritess T. Martin, District Collector of the Port, issued a warrant of seizure and detention against the shipment due to violation of the National Tobacco Administration Memorandum Circular No. 03 and Republic Act No. 10863, or the Customs Modernization Tariff Act.

It can be recalled that, last month, the port also seized two shipments worth P84.97 million from the same consignee.
