Execs in SRB scandal must resign — Zubiri

Senate President Juan Miguel “Migz” Zubiri on Saturday called on members of the Sugar Regulatory Board (SRB) involved in the illegal importation order of 300,000 metric tons of sugar to resign from their posts.

“We are really mad. As a matter of fact, if it’s not just a weekend, I will have a privilege speech about it. I’m planning to give a privilege speech on Monday asking those who participated in the illegal sugar (importation) order to resign from their posts,” Zubiri said in a radio interview.

He noted that he was glad that Department of Agriculture (DA) Undersecretary Leocadio Sebastian already resigned from his post. However, he said that other officials who signed the resolution should also follow the same path.

“My question is, why do other members of the Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) not yet resigning from their posts. Imagine its mother agency — an undersecretary for the DA — already resigned,” he said.

“What happened to the SRA administrator, who was the one who convinced Undersecretary Sebastian to sign the document on behalf of the president?” he added.

Sebastian, who admitted that he was the one who signed a resolution calling for the additional importation of 300,000 metric tons of sugar even without the approval of the president resigned from his post, according to Malacañang.
