1 dead, 2 wounded in shooting spree at Tondo basketball game

A heated basketball game turned violent Thursday night in Balut, Tondo, leaving one bystander dead and two others wounded.

The Manila Police District-Raxabago Police Station identified the fatality as John Mathew del Pilar, 24, male, last residing at 110 Simon Ext., Barangay 103, Tondo. Injured were Johansel Austria, 18, male, residing at 17-C T. Sora St., Barangay 105, Tondo, who sustained a gunshot wound on the right side of the body and is now confined at Tondo Medical Center; and Andrea Enciso, 17, female, a student residing at 049 Pechay St., Barangay 103, Tondo, who was hit by a stray bullet and is confined at Tondo Medical Center.

The suspect was identified as Joseph Ariola, a 40-year-old married businessman residing at 289 Ugbo St., B96 Tondo, Manila. He is now under custodial investigation by the police.

According to the police, a basketball game was held at the covered court of Barangay 137 between the suspect’s team and another team that eventually became intense, leading to an altercation between the players. The suspect then drew a gun and fired successive shots, hitting Del Pilar, Austria and Enciso who were all bystanders at the game.
