Garcia bows out in squash

Robert Garcia bowed out of the quarterfinals in the Alta Group Pennant Hills NSW Squash Open 2022 after absorbing a 12-10, 11-5, 6-11, 11-8 loss to hometown bet Rhys Dowling at Penant Hills NSW in Australia Friday.

It was the 36-year-old’s second tournament in Australia where he is campaigning to make it into the Top 100 of the Professional Squash Association.

In the first round, the 166-ranked Filipino scored an 11-7, 4-11, 11-5, 11-5 win over Amir Amirul of Malaysia Thursday.

Philippine Squash Academy president Robert Bachmann said Garcia is getting accustomed to the cold weather in Australia and is slowly getting the points needed to boost his rankings
“ I believe he has now adjusted to the climate. After two events, his game performance improved,” Bachmann said.

“He acquired 18 points in the first event and 15 points in the second. PSA computes world ranking points at the end of every month. Hence, these points will reflect his overall ranking as of 1 September. He needs to reach the semis at the least to significantly improve his ranking in October.”

He said that the Southeast Asian Games gold medalist has to work on his finesse shots ahead of his the Volkswagen Bega Open 2022 set 31 August to 4 September.
