Dasol sees steady sea cucumber growth

DASOL, Pangasinan — A steady increase in the population of sea cucumbers was seen in the waters of Barangay Osmeña Mariculture Park here after the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources-1 started the stock enhancement program of the said aquatic species.

The Barangay Eastern Osmeña Fishermen Organization revealed that the increase in the population of sea cucumbers — citing that the stock enhancement program — has been a big help to the boom of these marine creatures.

During a courtesy call to Mayor Rizalde Bernal, the group said that BFAR-1 continues to provide assistance by further stocking the park with 1,000 pieces of abalone and 2,700 pieces of juvenile sea cucumber.

Bernal and Municipal Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Management Council chairperson Alejandro Lopez assured that the area is being monitored for protection of the stocks.

A stocking activity was later held led by BFAR Technical Personnel Ed Ronquillo Jr. and Diody Quimno, Municipal Agriculturist Maria Frieda Briz, and Municipal Fisheries Coordinator Villalyn Orias.
Meanwhile, BFAR-1 distributed fuel subsidy cards to 100 fisherfolk in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte.

Provincial Fishery Officer Vanessa Abegail Dagdagan said the beneficiaries are from nine coastal barangays of the city. They are victims of the earthquake last July and of the typhoon Florita, two calamities which devastated their livelihood.

LGU-Fishery Coordinator Ligaya Barroga also thanked the bureau and the provincial government for the program because it really helps the fisherfolk during this time considering the continuous spike of fuel cost.

Aside from the fuel subsidy, BFAR-1 also provided technical assistance to the fisherfolk, whether they are engaged in capture or in production.
