Dolly de Leon takes Toronto Film Festival by storm

After getting noticed at the Cannes Film Festival where the movie she’s cast in, Ruben Östlund’s Triangle of Sadness, won the highest prize, the Palm d’Or, on 28 May, Filipino actor Dolly de Leon has taken Toronto by storm.

Triangle of Sadness, described by Variety as a “darkly comic exploration of class and inequality,” and which features De Leon in a pivotal role of the toilet manager of the cruise ship that sinks, is currently screening at the Toronto International Film Festival in Canada.

Twitter is abuzz over De Leon’s performance, which has gained her instant fans.

Brian Yung (@brianyungtweets), an executive at the Warner Music Group in Hong Kong, said: “Triangle of Sadness is one of the best things I’ve seen this year. A riot from start to finish. THE WRITING. THE PHYSICAL COMEDY. DOLLY DE LEON. THE PRODUCTION DESIGN. DOLLY DE LEON. DOLLY DE LEON.”

Erin M. Brady (@erinmartina): “Triangle of Sadness might be a bit longer than some might like it to be, and not every joke or piece of commentary lands. However, it is still a ruthless look at social dynamics and fragility. Dolly de Leon steals the show, and Charlbi Dean could’ve been a star.”

Nadia (@nadreviews): “Triangle of Sadness does. not. let. up. A 2-hour feverish nightmare on the sea that rocks to the brink of insanity. Fierce, funny, entertaining. Dolly de Leon is a force.”

Manori (@manori_r): “Dolly de Leon is an absolute hit in Toronto. Massive cheers for her throughout the Triangle of Sadness screening. Rightly so!”

Ben Martin (@benmurtun): “I’m the head campaigner for Dolly de Leon’s Best Supporting [Actress] nomination.”

Erik Anderson (@awards_watch): “Triangle of Sadness is such a vicious and savage capitalist satire, a vom-com on the Titanic and an episode of Survivor all in one. Loved Harris Dickinson, the late Charlbi Dean and f**king Dolly de Leon.”

Tyrell William Lisson (@TyrellLisson): “Triangle of Sadness is Ostlund’s take on class and power dynamics in his signature comedic tone. It’s well executed, if not a little overlong. Wonderfully acted, standouts being the late Charlbi Dean, and Dolly de Leon.”

Kat (@claire_foy): “Triangle of Sadness was a hoot! It explores themes of social status, consumerism, and so many more with the absurd situations. The message it’s trying to get at is confusing at times but overall, a funny critique on the society we live in. Dolly de Leon is a f**king star!”

Filipino screenwriter, director, editor and producer Coreen “Monster” Jimenez (@monsterjimenez): “I just saw Triangle of Sadness at @TIFF_NET and I love how receptive the crowd is, like it’s one big couch full of friends and family. DOLLY DE LEON is the best thing in there. And Charlbi Dean is surely a comet gone too soon because she was brilliant in the film.”
