76 students experience food poisoning in Occidental Mindoro

76 students from San Francisco Elementary School in Sablayan, Occidental Mindoro were rushed to different hospitals on Monday morning due to suspected food poisoning.

According to Sablayan Municipal Health Officer Dr. Meldie Soriano, the students experienced vomiting and dehydration after eating lumpia bought from a barangay health worker who sells merienda dishes at the school.

Dr. Soriano, however, said that only 23 out of 76 students were admitted to the hospitals for treatment.

“So far, there are no severe cases according to our attending physicians,” she said.

Dr. Soriano also said that there are six teachers who also experienced vomiting just like what happened to the students.

“We will investigate the food handling or who handled the food and how it was handled,” she said.

“According to our interview, the food was cooked Sunday night, wrapped and was placed inside the refregirator and was fried at 5:30 in the morning,” the municipal health officer added.

Dr. Soriano said some of the students have been discharged already from the hospitals.

Sought for comment, the Department of Education said it will investigate the incident.

“We are currently coordinating with the Schools Division Office to get the facts,” DepEd spokesperson Michael Poa said in a statement.
