Ian Veneracion on K-dramas: Adversity makes us sharp and competitive

Ian Veneracion thinks banning K-dramas is not a good idea.

Speaking at a media conference for his coming Amazon Prime Video series, One Good Day, Veneracion was asked to comment on Sen. Jinggoy Estrada’s controversial remark about stopping the influx of Korean movies and TV series into the country as a strategy to promote the long-moribund Philippine entertainment industry.

“Sana support us na lang,” said the 47-year-old actor/singer/sportsman, who’s celebrating his 40th anniversary in showbiz. In One Good Day, Veneracion plays Dale Sta. Maria, a hitman who walks out on his criminal gang after being diagnosed with brain tumor.

“Korean (content) is flourishing because these are well supported by their government… I’m hoping that, with (our) government’s support, for example, (through) tax cuts, it might help (our) industry, and for our viewers to continue watching Filipino movies,” Veneracion said.

Good Day.’

“Adversity is good because it makes us sharp and (more) competitive. I really believe in the Filipino talent. “Bigyan tayo ng budget (na pang) -Hollywood movies, imagine what we can come up with,” he added, stressing that the country is not lacking in top-caliber directors and actors.

Veneracion recalled that when he was active in action movies, foreign action productions avoided head-on competition.

“Obviously, it’s not the case anymore. Ngayon, tayo ang umiiwas sumabay sa international movies,” he said. “Sa totoo lang, kapag namatay ang movie industry natin, who’s gonna tell our story?”

One Good Day, a six-episode action-drama about family, love, greed, and power, also stars Rabiya Mateo, Andrea Torres, Aljur Abrenica, Justin Cuyugan, Nicole Cordoves, Pepe Herrera, Robert Seña, and Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo.

Directed by Lester Pimentel Ong, the series premieres on Amazon Prime Video on 17 November.
