The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology recorded a magnitude 5.1 earthquake on the offshore Balut Island in Sarangani, Davao Occidental on Sunday.
The earthquake, which occurred at 10:15 a.m., was tectonic in origin with a depth of 259 kilometers.
Phivolcs initially reported the earthquake at a magnitude of 5.6, before downgrading it to 5.1. Its epicenter was tracked at 02.98°N, 128.65°E — 447 km S 53°E of Balut Island.
On the same, several tectonic earthquakes were also recorded in other parts of the country including a magnitude of 2.1 in Batuan, Masbate, which occurred at 10:36 a.m., followed by a 2.3 magnitude in Paluan, Occidental Mindoro at 12:01 p.m., a magnitude 2.9 in Don Marcelino, Davao Occidental at 12:11 p.m., and a magnitude 2.2 In Dilasag, Aurora.
Phivolcs said there’s no damage to properties was reported during these tremors. Aftershocks and tsunami threats are likewise not expected.
