‘Disenchanted’: ‘Happily ever after’ turns upside down

After 15 years, Disney’s musical fantasy romcom movie Enchanted has a sequel — and it’s called Disenchanted.

The movie’s worldwide release, set for Thanksgiving in the United States on 24 November, was advanced to 18 November.

It features music by eight-time Oscar-winning composer Alan Menken and lyrics by three-time Oscar-winning lyricist Stephen Schwartz.

As the story goes, husband Robert (Patrick Dempsey) and wife Giselle (Amy Adams) settle down and look forward to having kids.

But while living in the suburbs, Giselle turns their life upside-down when she’s cursed and turns into an evil stepmother to her teen stepdaughter Morgan (Gabriella Baldacchino) and her new baby girl.

The challenge? She has only until 12 midnight to get back to their normal lives.

“Frustrated that her happily ever after hasn’t been so easy to find, [Giselle] turns to the magic of Andalasia for help, accidentally transforming the entire town into a real-life fairy tale and placing her family’s future happiness in jeopardy,” said an official logline for the movie.

“Now, Giselle is in a race against time to reverse the spell and determine what happily ever after truly means to her and her family.”

Disenchanted was shot mostly in medieval settings in Enniskerry, Wicklow, and Dublin in Ireland.

Additional scenes were shot in Buckinghamshire, England and New York City in the US.

Disenchanted also stars Maya Rudolph, Yvette Nicole Brown, Jayma Mays, Idina Menzel, and James Marsden.

It is directed by Adam Shankman from a screenplay by Brigitte Hales and a story by J. David Stem & David N. Weiss, and Richard LaGravenese.

Disenchanted premieres 18 November and is available on Disney+.
