QC, DepEd aiding bus mishap victims

The Quezon City government and the Department of Education will jointly shoulder the medical expenses of the injured, as well as the aid to be given to the family of a teacher who died due to an accident in Orani, Bataan last week.

“The local government is ready to extend assistance to all teachers involved,” it said in a statement, referring to the 46 teachers who sustained injuries and one who died when one of three buses taking Quezon City teachers to a DepEd conference fell into a ravine.

The buses donated in 2016 by the local government to DepEd left the San Francisco High School compound in Quezon City on Friday for a gender development seminar.

The ill-fated bus had 48 people aboard, mainly public elementary and high school teachers, when it allegedly lost its brakes and fell off a sharp curve along Orani Road at around 11:30 a.m. on Saturday.

According to the police, the bus plunged into a 15-meter ravine just 15 minutes after departure from a resort on its way back to Quezon City.

One of the participants, a teacher of Payatas B Elementary School, was declared dead on arrival at the Orani District Hospital.

Three of the victims were brought to the Balanga Provincial Hospital for treatment while eighteen others were taken to the Bataan Disaster Risk Reduction and Management office for debriefing.

The bus driver was held at the Orani police station for questioning.

Another DepEd bus arrived in Bataan Sunday to transport the teachers back to Quezon City for further treatment, the LGU told reporters.

“The Quezon City government and DepEd vowed to shoulder the medical expenses of the injured teachers, including financial assistance for the family of the deceased,” the city government said.
