Fate’s Golden couple

Call it kismet or fate, Boboy and Irma Atillo’s love story is one to be gladly shared for theirs was an unforeseen encounter.

The year was 1971. Irma, then only 22 years of age, was with her cousin Diona Oraton on their way to the premier show of Love Story, an American romantic drama that made a mark in the emotions of lovers around the world and whose hummable musical score hit the charts. Boboy, a friend of Diona, not only introduced himself, but instantly joined them. It must have been love at first sight!

What naturally followed, as it has happened to people who fall in love, was the two going steady, a 1960s and 1970s term. In October the following year, they were married at the Sacred Heart Church in Cebu.

From this happy marriage were born two responsible children, Oregon-based Melissa and Dominic, who has made Cebu his home.

To celebrate 50 years of blissful togetherness, Boboy and Irma invited dear relatives and close friends who hold a special place in their hearts, to an evening of delectable food and excellent wine, soothing music, fun and much laughter, all these echoing throughout their stately home in San Fermin on the island of Mactan.

The golden couple did the traditional cutting of the two-tiered cake lovingly brought by Winglip and Pinky Chang. A few kisses ensued before the duo danced to one of their favorite songs, “For All We Know,” made famous by the Carpenters.

Asked to share the magic formula to staying together, the couple had this to say: “Love each other. Keep the faith and prayers and patience. Understand priorities. Take it one day at a time.”

Indeed, love has grown for them deeper by the day. Even after 50 years, the two are still lovingly collaborating. Expectedly, there were a lot of trials and problems, but they triumphed. It has been a good, blessed and fulfilling life for both of them and their family.
