Dolly de Leon earns 3rd int’l nod for Best Supporting Actress

Dolly de Leon’s nomination for Best Supporting Actress in the film Triangle of Sadness at the 43rd annual London Critics’ Circle Film Awards is her third.

First was the US-based International Press Academy giving her the nod at the 2022 Satellite Awards (to be held on 11 February 2023), and a second nomination (Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture) at the 80th Golden Globes to be aired live from the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles on 10 January 2023.

At the London Critics’ Circle Awards, which will be held on 5 February 2023, De Leon is nominated along with Hong Chau for The Whale, Nina Hoss for Tár, Kerry Condon for The Banshees of Inisherin, and Guslagie Malanda for Saint Omer.

Its website says, “The Critics’ Circle has existed since 1913 to protect cultural criticism from the censor and the despot. It was at first an offshoot of the Institute of Journalists on Fleet Street and has aways had the critics of the daily national papers as the core of its membership.

“The Circle views criticism as an arm of free speech and an essential ingredient of a healthy society. From small beginnings, the Circle today has 490 members shared between Theatre (117), Music (78), Film (151), Dance (57), Visual Arts (47) and Books (40).”

On 12 December, the same day of De Leon’s Golden Globes nomination, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association chose her as winner of the Best Supporting Performance award for Triangle of Sadness.

On 13 December, De Leon issued a statement on the double developments: “Napalaking karangalan na binigyan tayo ng recognition ng isa sa pinaka-prestigious na award-giving bodies sa US. Lalong-lalo na dahil may long-standing history ang LAFCA for recognizing the artistry of filmmaking not only within the US but also internationally. I’m honored to be finally seen.

“Alay ko ito sa buong bayan, sa bawat Pilipino dito at overseas na lumalaban araw-araw, sa mga nawawalan ng pag-asa. Hindi ako mag-isa rito. Magkakasama tayo.”

Triangle of Sadness, directed by Swedish filmmaker Ruben Ostlund, had its world premiere on 21 May at the Cannes Film Festival, where it won the highest prize, the Palme d’Or.
