PBBM asks diplomats’ support for UN Security Council seat

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Tuesday evening hosted the traditional New Year Vin d’ Honneur for the diplomatic community at the Malacañang Palace where he again asked support for his government’s bid for the United Nations Security Council.

The chief executive asked for the diplomats’ support for the Philippine government’s candidature to the UN Security Council for the term 2027 to 2028.

“The Philippines counts on your support for our candidature for a non-permanent seat in the UN Security Council for the term 2027-2028. You’ll excuse my little bit of campaigning for the Philippines and our membership,” he said.

“The Philippines’ bid stands on the strong foundation of our well-recognized contributions to the shaping of a global rules-based architecture that places people and human dignity at the center and respects the sovereignty of nations,” he added.

The Security Council is tasked with maintaining international peace and security as well as deciding on the deployment of the UN peace operation.

The Council consists of five permanent members: China, France, the Russian Federation, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America.

On the other hand, the general assembly elects 10 non-permanent members for a two-year term.

The Philippines was part of the UN Security Council in the years 1957, 1963, 1980, 1981, 2004, and 2005.
