The Senate approved on the third and final reading a bill seeking to convert the municipality of Carmona into a component city of the province of Cavite. Senator Christopher “Bong” Go is a co-sponsor of the measure.
The Senate approved House Bill No. 3968, also known as the Charter of the City of Carmona, during the plenary session on Monday, January 30.
“The Municipality of Carmona shall be converted into a component city to be known as the City of Carmona, which shall comprise the present jurisdiction of the Municipality of Carmona, Province of Cavite,” the bill stated.
“The territorial jurisdiction of the City shall be within the present metes and bounds of the Municipality of Carmona,” it added.
Go said that the conversion of Carmona into a component city of Cavite is a “much-needed step towards progress and development.”
“In recent years, Carmona has shown remarkable growth in various sectors. The conversion of Carmona into a component city would further enhance its potential for growth and provide its residents with better access to basic services,” said Go.
“This will allow Carmona to have access to resources that would have otherwise been inaccessible,” he added.
The bill, principally authored by Cavite 5th District Representative Roy Loyola, was approved by the House of Representatives on final reading on September 5 last year. It was then transmitted and received by the Senate the following day.
At present, Carmona is considered a first-class urban municipality.
Go has been supportive of initiatives promoting urban development and progress. In 2021, Go authored and co-sponsored a measure creating the Metropolitan Davao Development Authority.
It seeks to address the growing needs of Davao City and nearby areas through the services which will be provided by the MDDA. These services include development planning, transport management, solid waste disposal and management, urban zoning, land use planning, shelter services, health and sanitation, as well as public safety.
Former president Rodrigo Duterte signed the measure into law on 27 April last year.
“Dahil sa mabilis na paglago ng ekonomiya ng Davao City at karatig-LGUs nito, panahon na po upang magkaroon doon ng isang sentralisadong ahensya na siyang magbibigay ng iisang direksyon at magsisilbing gabay sa urban planning ng mga lugar na ito” (Because of the rapid economic growth of Davao City and adjacent LGUs, it’s time to have a centralized that will provide direction and planning in terms of urban planning for these areas), Go said in a previous interview.
“Kaya naman, muli akong nagpapasalamat sa aking kapwa mambabatas sa pagsuporta sa panukalang ito” (That’s why I thank again my fellow lawmakers for their support for this measure), he added.
