National summit on lawyers’ ethical standards slated

A national summit on ethical standards for lawyers will be held in March 2023 which will be the culmination of the five leg caravan for the proposed Code of Professional Responsibility and Accountability caravan by the Supreme Court.

The ethics caravan is to update the 34-year old Code of Professional Responsibility (Code) and craft a modern, relevant, and responsive guide for lawyers’ conduct.

To recall, the caravan kicked off on 14 September 2022 at the University of San Carlos, Cebu for Regions VI, VII, VIII, and the province of Palawan, then proceeded to Davao City on October 24, 2022 for Regions IX, X, XI, XII, Caraga, and the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao; to Naga City on 10 November 2022 for Regions IV-B, and V; to Baguio City on 11 January 2023 for Regions I, II, CAR; and to Manila on 27 January 2023 for the National Capital Region.

The consultations were held in person as well as remotely through videoconferencing, with 1,149 participants joining onsite and 1,227 participating online.

Members of the Supreme Court Sub-Committee for the Revision of the Code of Professional Responsibility, led by chairperson Justice Amy C. Lazaro-Javier and Co-Vice Chairpersons Justices Samuel H. Gaerlan and Maria Filomena D. Singh, presented the salient provisions of the CPRA to participants, who were subsequently divided into breakout groups for a discussion on the CPRA.
