More than 3,000 assault rifles, 578,000 rounds of ammunition and 23 anti-tank guided missiles were seized from a boat intercepted by Western naval ships in the Gulf of Oman last 15 January, the United States military said Wednesday.
The weapons were coming from Iran and were intended for Houthi rebels in Yemen, the US Central Command said.
The operation took place “along routes historically used to traffic weapons unlawfully from Iran to Yemen,” CentCom said in a statement, according to Agence France-Presse.
Iran has been actively supporting the Houthi rebels in Yemen.
