Cebu’s first solar-powered building launched

Property developer JEG Development Corporation and partner Vivant COREnergy Inc. launched Friday the first commercial high-rise building in Cebu powered by solar energy.

The 22-floor JEG Tower @ One Acacia will have 37 kilowatt peak rooftop solar installation that will supply its daytime energy needs by producing 77 megawatthours annually.

JDC President Marko Sarmiento said the solar energy project is the company’s contribution and commitment to the community and environment.

“This thrust is in line with our green initiatives as a LEED Gold Certified building. As other developers see how easy and affordable it is to power their own buildings with solar energy, we all can contribute in the preservation of a cleaner and greener city of Cebu,” Sarmiento said.

JDC also expects the project to become the industry standard and perhaps even a requirement in the near future.

“Anticipating future standards will keep our building relevant for a longer period of time without any need for retrofitting,” he said.

JEG Tower @ One Acacia utilizes 93 units of 405Wp Canadian Solar PV modules and 27kW SolarEdge Grid-tied inverter.

The building is fueled by a 37 kWp Grid-tied Solar PV System designed to offset the electricity consumed from the grid by converting the available solar energy to serve daytime energy demand. The solar panels power the ground floor up to the 6th floor common area of the tower.

The JEG Tower solar project is the fifth operating distributed solar project of Vivant COREnergy in Cebu. The project represents the continuing efforts of the organization to support the growth of Cebuano companies by helping businesses manage their operating expenses through optimized electricity costs.

“COREnergy recognizes JEG’s aspiration to be an industry leader that will help transform Cebu through sustainable real estate development,” Al Douglas Villaos, COREnergy president, said.

“ We aim to support the realization of this aspiration by delivering world-class energy solutions to JEG,” he added.
