Ice Seguerra became viral recently with his rendition of the Cebuano love song “Usahay,” which garnered 4 million views and over 100,000 reactions on Facebook.
So Seguerra is more than eager to perform for the Cebuanos. “I love performing for the Cebuanos. In my many years of performing there, you can see that they really know what they want out of a performance. They really listen so, if you mess up, you’re toast. But when they appreciate your music and performance, they’re also all-out in showing their enjoyment,” he said.
Seguerra got his first guitar from a visit to Cebu many years ago, a fond memory he has with his mother when he was still a child performer. From that inspiration, the singer-songwriter has included well-loved Visayan songs in the evening’s repertoire.
“‘Usahay’ and ‘Matud Nila’ were the first songs I learned when I was a kid. I remember we had a show in Cebu when I was six years old.
“The lyrics were tongue-twisters, but when I heard the music, I fell in love with the songs. I asked my Bisaya friends what the lyrics meant. When I found out, I was in love even more with the songs,” he said.
For Becoming Ice, Seguerra will share the stage with up-and-coming VisPop idols from Cebu’s vibrant music scene, including the Oh! Caraga band and Jerika Teodorico of “Labyu, Langga” fame. He will also fly in special guests, including Concert King Martin Nievera, Bayang Barrios, Mike Villegas, Cooky Chua, and Frenchie Dy. Other special participants include Sylvia Sanchez and Vic Sotto.
Becoming Ice happens at the Pacific Grand Ballroom, Waterfront Cebu Hotel and Casino in Cebu City on 18 February. Tickets available at SM Tickets Online, smtickets.com, and at the Waterfront Hotel ticket counter.
