LTFRB mulls when to end traditional jeepneys

The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board is still deciding when to end the traditional jeepneys’ charter in the metropolis and pave the way for the government’s modernization program.

The LTFRB Board this week deliberated with stakeholders regarding the parameters of ending the jeepney franchise and how to put up the necessary rules and regulations in phasing them out of the Metro Manila streets.

Joel Bolano, head of the LTFRB Technical Division, said there is still no definite date or deadline yet for them to issue the Memorandum Circular ending the franchise of traditional jeepneys.

“We will just wait for the final date up to when the extension of their authority to operate will be. This will be part of the new memorandum circular that we will issue very soon,” Bolano said.

He added that to encourage jeepney operators and drivers to join the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program, the agency will be tapping the help of the Office of the Transport Cooperative to explain the benefits joining the government’s program.

“Aside from that we also have the Project Management Office that is focused on the PUVMP. Its objective is to assist and guide stakeholders for the requirements and processes of consolidation,” Bolano said.

“The objective of the PUVMP is to modernize and change the system in the transport sector, including fleet modernization or upgrading the units,” the official told the Daily Tribune.
