The Mactan Electric Company on Tuesday revealed that Mactan Island will experience power outages as there was a decrease of power supply transmission.
According to MECO general manager Engr. Gilbert Pagobo, one of the two transmission lines of the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines got cut off due to the digging at the crossroads of Ouano Avenue in Mandaue City.
He stressed that the incident may cause a series of brownouts and even as he notified that the incident will also increase power rates.
“Our capacity left is 180 megawatts and now the demand is more than 180 after the transmission line was cut off,” Pagobo said.
He cited that their consumers can expect increase in power rates by P2 per kilowatt hour in the monthly bills for the coming months.
Pagobo disclosed that it was not the first time that a transmission line of NGCP was affected by a road project in Mandaue City. In 2015 and 2019, there were similar incidents and normally, the NGCP would need six months to completely restore its transmission.
MECO has a total of more or less 110,000 household consumers and 600 industrial consumers, most are locators of MEZ 1-3.
The municipal council of Cordova, through Vice Mayor Victor Tago, meantime, expressed worries about the power supply crisis that they are to face.
Tago plans to pass a resolution to urge NGCP, the Energy Regulatory Commission and the Department of Public Works and Highways to shed light on the incident.
