Disney has revealed that new sequels to several of its most popular films, including Toy Story, Frozen, and Zootopia, are in the making.
Disney CEO Bob Iger made a number of big announcements for fans on Wednesday during the company’s earnings call for the year-end 2022 quarter, following the revelation of layoffs and losses. Iger disclosed that two new sequels of the popular franchises Toy Story and Frozen are in the works. A Zootopia sequel was also announced.
There have been four theatrical chapters of the Toy Story series, plus a spin-off — Lightyear — in 2022. Despite the latter film ending up a flop, Toy Story 3 and Toy Story 4 both made more than $1billion at the global box office.
Meanwhile, the 2013 debut of the first Frozen movie was a massive success, and the 2019 release of the sequel, Frozen II, brought in more than $1.4 billion at the tills. Aside from the movies, the franchise has also given rise to a Broadway musical, a Disney on Ice show, and a number of short films, television specials, and books.
Iger also announced that an Avatar experience will be coming to Disneyland in Anaheim, California, bringing the world of Pandora to the West Coast.
Pandora: The World of Avatar, a section devoted to James Cameron’s works, is currently located in Disney’s Animal Kingdom in Orlando. It has two rides: “Avatar Flight of Passage” and “Na’vi River Journey.”
The second Avatar movie, Avatar: The Way of Water, passed Titanic on 5 February to become the third-highest grossing foreign picture in
box-office history. Cameron had said he intends to produce three more Avatar movies to complete the series.
