Arnel Pineda found himself at the center of a controversy involving other members of the rock band Journey.
The turmoil began when the plan of a Journey reunion with original vocalist and keyboardist Gregg Rolie was scrapped because two current band members were said to be against the idea. This was claimed by Michaele Schon, wife of guitarist Neal Schon, via Facebook.
“TWO BAND MEMBERS of the Journey current LINE UP ARE ‘adamant NO’ against Gregg Rolie to return,” Michaele wrote.
She then noted that Rolie and Neal “will be somewhere together at least once this year” in honor of the band they started in 1972.
Fans were quick to blame current frontman Pineda and keyboardist Jonathan Cain.
The drama continued when Michaele addressed Cain and Pineda as “the other guy in the band who forgot where they came from.”
“Faith, let’s ask God to find a way for them. let’s pray for forgiveness for those who hurt Gregg Rolie and hope they learn what spirituality is someday. We all love you!” Michaele added.
Pineda took to social media to air his side.
“You people are unbelievable… whoever’s spreading rumor about me regarding the #GregRollie issue? are maliciously ignorant..im not gonna stoop down to your level.. [sic],” he wrote.
Pineda continued that “including me in the drama is stupid,” that he has paid his dues, and reminding him of where he came from isn’t necessary because “it’s in my heart every day.”
“I’m with the band to sing the legacy.. if some of them are tired of me being with them, with all means, they can fire me anytime.. and don’t lecture me about spiritual BS.. #walkthetalk [sic],” he said.
Jeff Scott Solo, who was a vocalist of Journey from 2006 to 2007, aired his support for Pineda amid the drama.
He said, “You have NOTHING or NO ONE to answer to brother, you’re a kind, gentle and huge heart with a huge talent to match, it’s the age-old crap when you achieve success and happiness, there are many who want to break you down! Stay the course, YOUR course, I’m proud to be your friend!”
Journey is currently on its 50th anniversary tour.
