Amsterdam Rainbow Dress returns to Sydney

The Amsterdam Rainbow Dress returns to Australia for the Sydney WorldPride. The artwork is on display at the Marri Madung Butbut: The First Nations Gathering Space at the art space Carriageworks in Eveleigh from 23 to 28 February.

Created in the Netherlands by Mattijs van Bergen, Arnout van Krimpen, Jochem Kaan and Oeri van Woezik, the Amsterdam Rainbow Dress is made of the national flags from 71 countries where being LGBTQ+ is illegal and punishable by imprisonment, torture, or death. A rainbow flag replaces the flag of a country that adopts LGBTQ+ inclusive legislation. Housed and owned by the Amsterdam Museum, it has traveled to different parts of the world including Canada, Mozambique, Argentina, Sweden and Poland, highlighting human rights issues and LGBTQ+ struggles.

In September 2022, the Amsterdam Rainbow Dress came to Sydney in preparation for the Sydney WorldPride Human Rights Conference to be held from 1 to 3 March. Its arrival is made possible by Amsterdam Pride, The Netherlands government and the Australian Embassy in the Netherlands.

The First Nations Gathering Space is a component of Sydney WorldPride with an array of events and activities including exhibits, shows, dining and drag, spotlighting the indigenous peoples and cultures.
