‘Bigtime’ Taiwanese drug lord deported

The Bureau of Immigration on Wednesday reported that it has deported a Taiwanese national tagged as a fugitive by his home country on 22 March 2023.

The foreign national — identified as Chen Chein, believed to be a bigtime Taiwanese drug lord — was deported from the country via a China Airlines flight bound for Taipei, according to BI commissioner Norman Tansingco.

Tansingco disclosed that Chen was arrested earlier this month by elements of the BI’s fugitive search unit in Makati City in coordination with agents from the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency, the Anti-Organized Crime Unit and the Intelligence Division of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group of the Philippine National Police.

Chen was reportedly a wanted fugitive in Taiwan and was the subject of a warrant of arrest issued by the Chiayi District Prosecutors Office in 2006 for kidnapping.

He is also said to be the ringleader of a notorious Taiwanese syndicate that engage in the production of illegal narcotics as well as telecom fraud, kidnappings and other illegal activities.

The BI chief also said that this is a major arrest for the bureau, stressing that foreign nationals like him who are involved in major crimes have no place in our country.

As a consequence of the deportation, Chen’s name has been included in the BI’s blacklist, effectively barring him from returning to the Philippines.
