Ex-NCAA MVP joins PBA draft

A former National Collegiate Athletic Association Most Valuable Player is joining the mix of young players wanting to play in the Philippine Basketball Association.

Letran College star Fran Yu will be entering a new phase in his career as he joins the Annual Rookie Draft set in October.

Yu’s agent Alvin Torno said the 5-foot-10 floor general is already ripe to play in the professional ranks after emerging as NCAA Finals MVP in Season 95 while winning three titles with the Knights.

He averaged 10.8 points, 4.4 rebounds and 4.2 assists for the Knights in his final season in the NCAA.

“Yes, Fran Yu will be joining this year’s PBA Draft,” Torno said.

Also joining the draft is former San Sebastian star Ichie Altamirano, St. Clare standout Irven Palencia and forward King Destacamento.

Regarded as one of the steadiest playmakers in the NCAA, Altamirano averaged 9.3 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game in the previous season.

He also saw action for the Stags’ team in the PBA D-League.

Palencia, on the other hand, was a member of the BRT Sumisip Basilan-St. Clare that won the championship in the 2019 Foundation Cup.

Destacamento, on the other hand, played for the Basilan Steel, the Davao Occidental Tigers and Zamboanga in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League.
