The Bureau of Fire Protection on Sunday disclosed that it has recorded a 40 percent increase in fire incidents this year compared to the same period last year as it warned the public to intensify efforts in preventing fires.
BFP data from 1 to 26 April 2023 showed that there were 1,332 fire incidents compared to 953 incidents of the same period in 2022, adding that high demand for power or electricity during summer contributed greatly fire incidents.
It added that faulty electric wires, dried leaves, grass and garbage materials which easily catch fire or lighted cigarette butts were also major causes of fire incidents.
Meantime, Department of the Interior and Local Government Secretary Benhur Abalos Jr. reiterated his call to local government units to conduct inspections particularly to establishments that are susceptible to fire.
He added that LGUs and the BFP can work hand in hand in carrying out the checking on businesses prone to fire incidents and verify if they really adhere to Republic Act 9514 o Fire Code of the Philippines.
“Let us make sure that the buildings have fire exits, fire protection systems like sprinklers, hose box and other fire safety features pursuant to the Fire Code of the Philippines. Let us not disregard these things since lives and the safety of our fellowmen are at stake here,’’ Abalos said.
The DILG chief reminded that following simple fire safety protocols can save lives and properties such as unplugging appliances not in use and regular LPG tank inspections.
