BAGUIO CITY — Baguio residents, visitors and netizens continue to express concern after a picture of the famous Lion’s Head on Kennon Road showing a crack from its lower lip to the lower jaw went viral.
Days after the photo of the tourist attraction got countless reactions, the City Buildings and Architecture Office under Arch. Johnny Degay said the crack was found to be non-structural.
Degay said the crack does not threaten the structural integrity of the monument.
Engr. II Frederick Dulo of the CBAO building management division said an inspection of the lower jaw showed the crack was only on the surface and did not extend to the structure’s interior.
Restoration lined up
Dulo said the CBAO was scheduled to undertake the patching and painting of the damage last 9 June.
The Baguio City Host Lions Club reportedly said it will undertake the restoration of the monument to ensure its integrity.
According to the club, the 40-foot Lion’s Head “was conceived by the Lions of Baguio in the late 1960s and was formally unveiled in 1972.”
It was carved out of natural limestone along scenic Kennon Road and became a popular landmark of the city. Tourists usually have pictures taken in front of it before proceeding to the other attractions the vacation city has to offer.
