San Leonardo slope protection collapses

San Leonardo, Nueva Ecija — The local government here disclosed that at least 28 families were affected after a slope protection structure at a portion of the Pampanga River in Purok 3, Barangay Tambo Adorable crumbled due to the continuous rainfall.

According to one of the residents living near the structure, they noticed the slow downward movement of the soil around Sunday afternoon, adding that the downward movement continued until 8 a.m. Monday morning.

A social media post showed that at least 20 houses collapsed along with the slope protection while five more houses are on the verge of collapsing. It also showed that a total of 109 individuals were evacuated from the area.

The suddenly-homeless residents sought temporary shelter at an evacuation center in San Leonardo. The animal rescue team also rescued two dogs and one chicken during their operation.

Mayor Froilan Nagano led an inspection of the area along with other elected officials, Philippine National Police and the Bureau of Fire Protection.

Nagano and the group helped the residents evacuate the area while salvaging their belongings that were either covered in mud or on the Pampanga River.

Meantime, personnel from the San Leonardo Police Station conducted police visibility and monitoring of landslide area at the said area.
