Four-wheel dive

There already are prototypes of flying cars but there’s still a long way to go before cars that can run like boats are invented. Ordinary cars can only roll on flooded roads, if the water is not too deep, or dive in by accident.

In Simrol, Madhya Pradesh, India, a car recently slid into a waterfall pool. A young girl inside the red car screamed for help and picnickers in the area swam to her rescue.

The 13-year-old girl’s father who was also caught inside the car was saved by one of the rescuers, Sunil Mathew, 26, a worker in a private firm, according to a report by Press Trust of India.

Police official Sunil Mehta blamed the accident on the negligence of the driver who parked the car very close to the pool, India Today reported.

In Australia, 30 divers took turns driving a modified 1978 Toyota Land Cruiser eight kilometers across the crocodile-infested Darwin Harbor last 29 July. And they did it underwater.

With its waterproofed electric motor, the jeep was driven in depths of up to 30 meters and it reached the other side in 12.5 hours, project leader Tom Lawrence said, according to Agence France-Presse.

It was the first successful underwater car crossing at Darwin Harbor after a previous attempt in 1983 using an old diesel motor and giant snorkels stopped about halfway, Lawrence said.
