Northern Samar on the hunt for new teachers

CATARMAN — The Northern Samar provincial government is hiring 100 senior high school teachers to address the shortage of teaching personnel throughout the province.

Governor Edwin Ongchuan met with the provincial school board this week to discuss pressing problems facing the opening of classes this year.

“Through the School Board, the provincial government will assist the Department of Education in not just addressing the shortfall of classrooms but also the shortage of teachers, especially for senior high school,” Ongchuan said.

Noe Hermosilla, chief of the School Governance and Operations Division at DepEd Northern Samar, admitted that the lack of classrooms and teachers for senior high school students is the their most pressing problem.

Ongchuan said the 100 teachers to be hired will receive a monthly honorarium of P12,000.

Ongchuan reiterated the provincial government’s commitment to assist the DepEd in not just addressing the shortfall of classrooms but also the shortage of teachers in the area.

As of September 22, 2023, the Division of Northern Samar recorded a total of 185,642 enrollees from kindergarten to senior high school, encompassing both public and private schools.

Earlier, the provincial government also recruited 92 learning support aides who will assist elementary teachers in nurturing students’ foundational skills, with a particular focus on reading and writing proficiency.
