LTO chief orders Tondo road rage probe

Land Transportation Office Chief, Assistant Secretary Atty. Vigor Mendoza II on Saturday said he has ordered a thorough investigation into the fatal road accident in Tondo, Manila involving a trailer truck and a delivery van that happened last Thursday, 12 October.

Mendoza said he already instructed LTO-National Capital Region Director Roque Verzosa III to issue a Show Cause Order to the registered owner of the trailer truck and its driver identified by the police as Marlon Valdez Ilas.

Mendoza’s order was based on a news report about the death of delivery van driver Benjamin Endrina Bagtas who was crushed to death when he was pinned between his van and the trailer truck following what appears to be a result of a road rage incident.

Based on the police report obtained by the LTO, both the drivers of the delivery van and the trailer truck were cutting each other’s path along the southbound of Mel Lopez Boulevard in Tondo.

Bagtas then alighted from the vehicle but he was pinned against the van and the trailer truck when Ilas veered the truck towards his direction and continue driving which resulted in the victim being dragged.

The victim was declared dead in the hospital while the driver of the trailer truck is now under police custody and facing criminal charges.

Mendoza said the office of Department of Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista was already informed of this latest incident of road rage.
