Sandiganbayan junks cashier’s reversal plea

The Sandiganbayan has dismissed the bid of a former cashier of the state-owned Human Settlements Development Corp.-Maharlika Livelihood Complex to reverse the court’s ruling which found her guilty of malversation raps for “embezzling” P374,319.84 from 2017 to 2018.

In a resolution dated 16 October, the Sandiganbayan Second Division denied the motion for reconsideration of Nila Cariño, the former cashier of state-owned Human Settlements Development Corp.-Maharlika Livelihood Complex.

“The Court stands behind its original pronouncement and will not depart from its previous ruling that the evidence presented by the prosecution is sufficient to prove accused-appellant’s guilt beyond reasonable doubt,” the anti-graft court ruled.”

To recall, Cariño sought to overturn the Sandiganbayan’s decision back in June which affirmed the 2022 decision of the Baguio Regional Trial Court Branch 6 that meted out seven years in prison against her for misappropriating P374,319.84 shortage in public funds that she incurred as a shortage from October 2017 to July 2018.
