Just 10 months after its debut and NewJeans has already notched a world record as the fastest K-pop act to reach 1 billion streams on Spotify, the Guinness World Records announced on 8 March.
The South Korean girl group consisting of Minji, Haerin, Hanni, Danielle and Hyein secured the title in just 219 days with the combined streams of six songs in their discography — “Attention,” “Hype Boy,” “Cookie,” “Hurt,” “Ditto” and “OMG”.
Said the Guinness World Records in its website: “‘Ditto’ (313.2 million) and ‘OMG’ (312.4 million) were neck and neck in the race to be (labeled) NewJeans’ most streamed track on Spotify, as of 4 May. The group released their latest single, ‘Zero,’ on 3 April (18.07 million streams as of 4 May).”
The previous record-holder was BTS’ Jungkook, who gained the title on 27 March (409 days). Outside of BTS, he racked up 1 billion streams for his songs “Stay Alive,” “Left and Right” and “Dreamers.”
His predecessor was Blackpink’s Lisa, who occupied the post on 26 October 2022 (411 days). As a solo act, she amassed a billion Spotify streams for three tracks under her name — “LALISA,” “MONEY” and “SG.”
NewJeans is also gearing up for new releases and performances. According to Naver, the quintet will “release a pre-release song at the end of June” and “will release a new album with pre-release songs in early July.”
Meanwhile, Korea JoongAng Daily reported that NewJeans is set to perform at the Lollapalooza and Summer Sonic Festival in August of this year.
