Graduation is always a happy occasion for the family as it represents an important life accomplishment for both children and parents.

Arturo Fernandez of Occidental Mindoro felt that way when he graduated from the Sablayan Central School on 17 July. He felt good and proud as he walked up the school stage in a toga to receive his diploma as his family and teachers applauded and cheered.

Fernandez, 66, graduated from elementary school through the Department of Education’s Alternative Learning System. ALS allows people like him to study while they are working.

The tricycle driver was forced to stop school after Grade 2 due to poverty, GMA Regional TV Balitang Southern Tagalog reported.

Now, the father of six plans to continue studying via ALS to qualify for a training course under the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority. His ultimate goal is to earn a TESDA certification and get a better job.

If a senior citizen can do it, there is no reason why Enrico Pantoja can’t do the same.

Going to school was as tough for Pantoja as it was for Fernandez because he felt ashamed sitting alongside classmates far younger than him. Teacher Raquel Liu of Amaya Elementary School in Tanza, Cavite, said Pantoja was initially shy but eventually got used to his classmates who called him “kuya,” GTV’s State of the Nation reported.

Pantoja, 15, said he never felt as happy as the day he graduated kindergarten with a special award for being good at relating to his classmates.

For those like him who are hesitant to learn to read and write, Pantoja said they don’t have to be ashamed about going to kindergarten as schools don’t mind how old their students are.
