The Maritime Industry Authority revealed on Tuesday that the arrested skipper of the star-crossed Aya Express, previously identified as MV Princess Aya, when it capsized last 27 July, has no captain’s license.
Marina added that the insurer of the said vessel, whose sinking resulted in the deaths of 27 people, had remained uncooperative in providing assistance to the families of the victims.
The maritime regulator had a meeting with the Aya’s operator, the Talim Island Passenger Motorboat and Patron Association, on Monday during which the latter revealed the supposed refusal of the insurer to cooperate.
“One of the primary issues raised was the duty of the insurance provider of Aya Express to indemnify those affected by the incident. As of this writing, there is no showing that the insurance provider has accepted, assessed any claim, or has settled reasonable claims,” Marina said.
“Officers of TIPMOPA are currently in negotiations with the insurer to secure the necessary assistance,” it added.
Meanwhile, the Provincial Government of Rizal has vowed financial aid to the families of the victims.
