Comelec to impose pre-election money ban

The Commission on Elections will be implementing a money ban five days before the voting for the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections on 30 October.

Comelec Chairperson George Garcia said anyone caught carrying cash that is P500,000 and above or making transactions via electronic wallets to 20 people will be presumed to participate in vote buying.

The money ban is part of Comelec’s efforts to prevent vote buying and other election-related offenses in the BSKE.

The Comelec will be working with the Philippine National Police to implement the money ban. The PNP will be conducting checkpoints and inspecting vehicles to ensure that no one is carrying large amounts of cash.

The poll body said that messengers, cashiers, and other employees whose job involves transporting money for their companies will be exempted from the money ban. These employees will only need to show their company ID as proof of their employment.
