Thief tip

Used clothes can sell at prices higher than brand new ones if they belong to celebrities. For an enterprising retired soccer player, he is auctioning off eight jerseys, all from players who competed in the 1990 World Cup that was hosted by Italy.

Derbyshire-based Hansons Auctioneers, which is selling the collector’s items by private tender, expects to rake in £300,000 (pounds) from bidders. Hansons is not naming the seller, only describing him as an ex-England footballer who also played in the 1990 Italia WC.

Highlighting the collection is a shirt that was worn by goalkeeper Peter Shilton that was signed by the entire British national club. The team reached the semifinals of the tournament that was eventually won by then West Germany. Shilton gave the shirt to his teammate, who is now selling it, in the dressing room after the team’s defeat, according to Hansons.

In contrast, Agnes Serafica, 52, of Sta. Rosa, Laguna, does not sell used clothes but brand new jewelry via live-stream on social media. Serafica has models who show off the jewelry during the live selling.

Last 5 September, Serafica was in the middle of selling when a man in a helmet entered her house and interrupted the broadcast by turning the phone camera over on the table. Brandishing a gun, he announced a holdup and ordered the seller and her models to lie on the floor.

The robber demanded that Serafica hand over the money. When she could not produce the cash, the thief took the jewelry and a phone, fleeing with a lookout on a motorcycle. The estimated worth of valuables stolen was P100,000.

Police investigators later identified one of the thieves as Serafica’s neighbor, who surrendered.

The suspect was caught as he regularly chatted with Serafica’s father. The father had mentioned that his daughter kept P3 million in her room, and this was what the thief  was after, according to Police Lt. Colonel Dwight Fonte Jr., Sta. Rosa City police chief, GMA Integrated News reported.
