German benchmark credits PLDT grid

The comprehensive investments of the PLDT Group in strengthening its network has translated to successive years of top-notch recognition from the Germany-based independent benchmarking organization umlaut.

Smart Communications Inc., the wireless subsidiary of integrated telecommunications firm PLDT Inc., over the weekend, announced that it won the “Best in Test” award from umlaut.

The report, which included 1.9 billion samples collected from February to July, also showed Smart ahead in mobile HD/UHD video, gaming, and OTT voice classes.

Smart posted an overall score of 745 out of a maximum of 1,000 points.

“Our investments over the years in strengthening our integrated fixed and wireless networks have enabled us to deliver enhanced mobile services to our subscribers across the country,” said PLDT and Smart Network head Eric Santiago.

Footprint expanded
As of the end of the first half, the PLDT Group managed to expand its total fiber footprint to over 1.1 million kilometers — consisting of international and domestic fiber supporting its network that covers 97 percent of the population with 3G, 4G/LTE and 5G.

As such, Santiago vowed to “continue to fortify and optimize our network, utilizing the latest technologies to make it more resilient and responsive to the needs of our customers.”

“These will also support our vision to become the undisputed network leader in the Philippines, delivering innovative solutions in the most cost-effective ways,” he added.

During the successful hosting of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 in the Philippines, Smart and Umlaut collaborated to deliver a seamless customer experience across its network.

They particularly focused on important event locations such as the Mall of Asia Arena, Smart-Araneta Coliseum, and Philippine Arena, as well as the hotels where delegates and international media guests stayed.

Smart has been awarded “Best in Test” since 2019 for having the widest 4G/LTE coverage, and fastest upload and download speeds. In both 2021 and 2022, Smart was recognized by umlaut for its exceptional network performance.
