South Korean teen romance movie 20th Century Girl is based on a true story.
Released on 21 October, it is the most-watched movie on Netflix Korea and no. 2 on Netflix Philippines.
The directorial debut of Bang Woo-ri explores the innocence of first love in 20th century South Korea. It is about a 17-year-old girl, Na Bora (Kim Yoo-jung), who helps her friend, Kim Yeon-du (Roh Yoon-seo), to get to know the boy he likes.
The Korea Times said Bang wanted to tell a coming-of-age story from the perspective of a teenage girl set in 1999. The 39-year-old director admitted she was like the girl in her movie.
“I wanted to make a teen romance film based on Korean culture,” Bang said. Stories about ’70s and ’80s were popular in previous years, but the retro obsession
fast-forwarded to the ’90s.”
“An unexpected incident in the past or trivial comments could define somebody’s future. Sometimes, a simple word lasts a lifetime,” she added.
20th Century Girl stars Byeon Woo-seok as one of the lead characters, with a special appearance by award-winning actor Han Hyo-joo.
