Suyom dreams of Olympic stint

Ronel Suyom just won his first medal for the Philippines and yet he already dreams of representing the Philippines in the Olympics someday.

In a radio interview yesterday, the 17-year-old boxer said he wants to follow in the footsteps of Tokyo Olympic medalists Eumir Marcial, Carlo Paalam and Nesthy Petecio in playing at the biggest sporting spectacle in the world someday.

Suyom recently bagged the silver medal in the minimumweight class at the recent World Youth Championships in La Nucia, Spain.

“I want to continue my training because I want to be an Olympian like Eumir Marcial, Carlo Paalam and Nesthy Petecio,” Soyum said.

“They are my inspirations in being an Olympian one day.”

Philippine Olympic Committee president Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino said Suyom can blossom into a very good fighter.

“He can do a lot better as his training and competitions go by. I wish him luck and encourage him to prepare himself as the next big thing in amateur boxing,” Tolentino said.
