Students at a school in Calumpit, Bulacan were not able to attend their classes for three straight weeks as their classrooms remain submerged under floodwaters.

In a bid to hasten resumption of regular classes, parents, students and teachers joined hands to drain the floodwaters at the Don Damaiana de Leon Memorial Elementary School.

School authorities expressed optimism they could soon resume classes but said they will conduct fogging operations first to protect the students from mosquito-borne diseases like dengue and chikungunya.

But with typhoon “Karding” threatening Northern and Central Luzon, rains may again force school authorities to defer plans to resume classes.

Instead of viewing the flood as a setback, maybe they can take it as an opportunity to prepare appropriate lessons for their students, such as the Archimedes principle or the physical law of buoyancy or the property of surface tension that allows insects to walk in water and crawl to our homes during floods.
