A detained overseas Filipino worker whose death sentence in the United Arab Emirates was reversed last year is to be released from prison on Thursday, according to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA).

UAE authorities are coordinating with the Philippine Embassy for the Thursday evening flight home of Jennifer Dalquez, said Ambassador to Abu Dhabi Hjayceelyn Quintana.

Dalquez was sentenced to death in 2015 for allegedly killing her employer on 7 December 2014 but was acquitted last year after the embassy appealed her case.

In a statement sent through DFA Assistant Secretary Elmer Cato, the agency welcomed the news.

Dalquez, a native of General Santos City, killed her employer in self-defense when the latter tried to rape her.

The UAE’s Court of First Instance of Al Ain meted the death sentence on Dalquez on 20 May 2015 and she appealed her case before the emirate’s Court of Appeals.

Dalquez was declared innocent by the UAE appellate court without diyyah or payment of blood money.
