JOLO, Sulu — The Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) is seeking to provide free legal assistance to detained individuals at the provincial jail facilities in Sulu through the Bangsamoro Human Rights Commission (BHRC).
According to Sulu Governor Abdusakur Tan, a team of officials from the BHRC-BARMM visited him recently and informed him about the plan of the commission to provide free legal assistance to Sulu detainees.
“That is a welcome development and it will speed up the resolution of cases now pending in some judicial court salas in this province,” Tan said.
BHRC-BARMM’s Atty. Ibn Ismael Sappayani, on the other hand, said that preparations for the program are already in place and it is expected to be implemented starting August.
“This is an excellent intervention. The legal assistance you will render to detainees will ease and help detainees resolve their financial legal burden,” said Tan.
The Sulu governor also showed to BHCR officials his proposed plan and designs for a new two-storey Hall of Justice building near the provincial capital in Patikul Sulu.
“It’s about time to introduce structures that belong to the 21st century in the province and make it at par with other major cities in the country,” Tan said.
The Hall of Justice is the perfect choice to start the process, he added.
Tan also allotted a 200 square meters lot area at provincial capitol grounds for the construction of a 2-story provincial BHRC-Sulu office.
