A Filipino-American woman was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole or probation for her role in the 2014 killing of a university professor in Tallahassee, Florida.
Katherine Magbanua, 37, was one of the suspects in the death of Daniel “Danny” Markel, a law professor at Florida State University.
Magbanua was found guilty by a 12-person jury for her connections to the murder-for-hire group that murdered Markel.
Magbanua was sentenced to life in prison plus an additional 30 years for conspiracy to commit murder and solicitation to commit murder last 29 July.
According to court records, Magbanua served as a liaison between the alleged mastermind, Charles Adelson, and the alleged gunman, Sigfredo Garcia, with whom she has two children.
Garcia was sentenced to life in prison by the court in 2019.
Adelson, Markel’s former wife’s brother, was arrested on 22 April by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and is charged with first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and solicitation of murder. He is currently being held at the Broward County Jail awaiting trial.
Tara Kawass, Magbanua’s lawyer, stated that they would appeal the verdict.
