Obiena bags bronze in Poland

EJ Obiena sustained his hot form when he clinched the bronze medal in the Poland Wanda Diamond League at the Stadion Slaski in Chorzow, Poland early Sunday (Manila time).

The 26-year-old Filipino pole vaulter cleared 5.73 meters in his second try to claim his first medal since emerging with bronze in the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon two weeks ago.

Reigning world champion Armand Duplantis remains impressive, setting a new meet record of 6.10 meters to claim the gold medal while Sondre Guttormsen of Norway also registered 5.73 meters but settled for the silver as he did it in his first try.

Hometown bet Piotr Lisek finished fourth with 5.63 meters while Chris Nilsen of the United States was at fifth with 5.53 meters.

Obiena’s training partner, Thiago Braz of Brazil, failed to make a single successful attempt as well as Thiabut Collet and 2012 London Olympics champion Renaud Lavillenie of France.

Obiena, the No. 3 vaulter in the world, will resume his campaign in Hungary when he vies in the World Athletics Continental Tour on Monday.
