Sen. Bong Go on Wednesday, August 17, welcomed the creation of the Senate Committee on Migrant Workers in a manifestation during the Senate regular session.
Go said that the legislative branch is moving in the right direction in its pursuit of protecting migrant workers.
“This Congress, we are indeed moving towards the right direction with the creation of the Senate Committee on OFWs that will be led by a very capable chairperson,” said Go.
“I commend my fellow Senator, and I am with you in trying to give a happy ending to the stories of our modern-day heroes,” he added.
The senator then denounced violence against Filipino overseas workers, recalling the several occasions he assisted OFWs who had experienced such abuse and mistreatment.
“Kinokondena ko po ang violence against our OFW. Sa katunayan po, may mga tinulungan po akong mga masahista na na-sexually abuse sa ibang bansa para makamit nila ang hustisya. Finally, convicted na po ang mga illegal recruiter,” recounted Go.
In the past, Go played a role in the subsequent granting of pardon to Roderick Aguinaldo, an overseas Filipino worker detained in Bahrain for four years after he was convicted for the death of a foreign national in the country.
Aguinaldo was sentenced to death penalty until his pardon and release from prison as a result of the efforts of the Philippine government.
“Ngayon po si Mr. Roderick Aguinaldo ay nabigyan po natin ng trabaho. Ika nga, kahit nakabalik siya rito, hindi pa po tapos ang ating trabaho sa gobyerno na mabigyan sila ng trabaho. Nahanapan po natin siya ng trabaho sa PPA (Philippine Ports Authority),” he shared.
