WBC ranks 17 Filipinos

Seventeen Filipino fighters made the latest top 15 rankings released by the Mexico-based World Boxing Council.

Following featherweight Mark Magsayo’s defeat to Mexican Rey Vargas last July, there was no Filipino puncher on the list of reigning champions.

Magsayo now occupies the No. 2 spot in the 126-lb list manned by Vargas, whose triumph made him the boxing body’s best fighter for the month of August 2022.

Magsayo was the lone Filipino listed in the star-studded division.

Other Filipinos rated by the WBC include Mike Plania (No. 13) in the super-bantam category, Nonito Donaire (No. 4) and Reymart Gaballo (No. 7) and Vincent Astrolabio (No. 13) at bantam and Donnie Nietes (No. 4) and Jade Bornea (No. 12) and Adrian Lerasan (No. 15) at super-fly.

Likewise making the grade are Giemel Magramo (No. 5) and Dave Apolinario (No. 15) at flyweight, Mark Vicelles (No. 3), Jayson Vayson (No. 13) and Mark Fajardo ((No. 15) at light-fly and Melvin Jerusalem (No. 2), Marco John Rementizo (No. 6), Rene Cuarto (No. 10) and Pedro Taduran (No. 11) at strawweight.

The 19-member Ratings Committee is headed by Dean Lohuis of the United States.

One of its members is Abraham Mitra, chairperson of the Games and Amusements Board.
